Panel discussion with top international legal experts hosted by the Embassy of Romania

On the 4th of September, the Embassy of Romania co-organized, together with Leiden University - Grotius Centre for International Legal Studies and the Romanian branch of the International Law Association, a panel discussion on the “International Law Responses to Challenges of the Global Environment”.

Renowned international legal experts, such as  Professor Dr. Bogdan Aurescu - Faculty of Law, University of Bucharest, Member of the UN International Law Commission, President of the Romanian Branch of the International Law Association, Presidential Advisor for Foreign Policy, Mr Philippe Couvreur, former Registrar of the International Court of Justice, Professor Dr. Patrícia Galvão Teles - auxiliary professor of international law at the Autonomous University of Lisbon, Member of the UN International Law Commission, Professor Dr.  Nilüfer Oral - Faculty of Law, Istanbul Bilgi University, Member of the UN International Law Commission,  Professor Larissa van den Herik- Vice-Dean of Leiden Law School and professor of public international law at the Grotius Centre for International Legal Studies at Leiden University, Dr Margaretha Wewerinke - Assistant Professor of Public International Law, Leiden University and Dr. Ion Gâlea, senior lecturer, Faculty of Law, University of Bucharest, Ambassador of Romania to the Republic of Bulgaria addressed the challenges posed by current and future changes of the environment and underlined the importance of the codification and progressive development of international law.

The speakers addressed timely and important topics such as: the sea level rise issue in relation to the International Law agenda of the International Law Commission and its possible effects regarding the law of the sea and the protection of persons and statehood, the global pact for the environment – progressive development or codification of the international law, the protection of the global environment at the international courts in The Hague and in The Netherlands, the work of the International Law Commission and the International Court of Justice related to the environment.

The event was attended by judges and other officials of various international courts based in The Hague, members of the diplomatic corps, academia and representatives of various NGOs with legal expertise.
