The celebration of the National Day of Romania

In the Centenary Year, the Embassy of Romania in the Netherlands and the Romanian Cultural Institute Brussels celebrated the National Day of Romania with the extraordinary jazz concert "Echoes of Bucharest" performed by the jazz quintet led by the acclaimed Romanian clarinettist Alex Simu, followed by a diplomatic reception.

The Ambassador of Romania stressed the significance of the National Day in the Centenary Year 2018, referring to the consistency of the Romanian-Dutch bilateral relations and the up-coming holding by Romania of the Presidency of the Council of the European Union.

It was in this context that the Romanian Ambassador handed over the Honorary Consul General of Romania to the Netherlands, Ben Jager, the National Order "For Merit" in rank of Officer, a distinction awarded by the President of Romania as a sign of appreciation for his contribution to the development of the economic and commercial relations between Romania and the Netherlands.

The extraordinary jazz concert "Echoes of Bucharest", an acknowledgment to the richness and diversity of the Romanian culture, included compositions by Alex Simu (Open Air Concert, The Thousand Lanterns, The Orphan, Armenian Street, Echoes of Bucharest, and Oceanology) but also an absolute premiere, a jazz performance of works by George Enescu and Dimitrie Cantemir. Under the guidance of Alex Simu, the following artists have performed: Franz von Chossy (piano, Germany), George Dumitriu (violin and guitar, Romania), Mattia Magatelli (bass, Italy), Kristijan Krajnčan (cello and battery, Slovenia).

Among the guests, there were the former Dutch Prime Minister Jan Peter Balkenende, representatives of the political, business, university and cultural environment, of the Dutch central and local administration, the Hague-accredited diplomatic community, representatives from European and international organizations including the International Court of Justice, Eurojust, the Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons, and other international tribunals based in The Hague, the Honorary Consuls of Romania in the Netherlands, and personalities from the Romanian community.

The event dedicated to the celebration of the National Day of Romania was organized in partnership with the cultural platform Romanian Jazz International. Volunteers from The League of Romanian Students Abroad contributed to the success of this celebration.
